Stein Eriksen Lodge is located slopeside in Silver Lake (upper Deer Valley).

When it comes to Deer Valley lodging, Stein's is the creme de la creme.   It is maybe 30 yards to the Sterling lift and 50 yards to Silver Lake Lodge (main base lift area), so you in the consummate upper Deer Valley location.


Located in the Silver Lake Lodge is the Mariposa restaurant and Royal Cafe. It is a short shuttle ride up to Empire Canyon Lodge where you can enjoy Fireside Dining.

The Glitretind, the on-site restaurant at Stein's, overlooks the slopes.  The Glitretind has a skiers's lunch buffet that is second to none. The variety of fare offered on the buffet is truly amazing.

While in the Stein Eriksen Lodge, take a look at all of Stein's medals/trophies in the hotel lobby and, if you are lucky, you may just see Stein himself walking around the lodge meeting and greeting guests!

Located at the base of Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR), the Lodge at Mountain Village is true ski in/out property. It makes for an excellent Park City vacation rental.

Units at the Lodge at Mountain Village are older, so it is important to check on whether the unit you are considering has been updated.  You can't compare these units by just looking at the rent rates.  You can easily pay what you think is market, then find out that you are in an older, tired unit.

The convenience of the Lodge units can't be beat. Short walk to the base restaurants, just steps from the slopes, bus service to Main Street, several ski rental shops to choose from, etc.

Snow Park Lodge sits at about 7100 feet, located about 1.5 miles from Old Town's Main Street.  City bus service makes it easy for skiers to get dropped off and picked up at Snow Park Lodge.

Silver Lake Lodge in upper Deer Valley is located at about 8100 feet.  One route to access it by car is via Royal Street - there are a series of switchback turns that make it an interesting climb. The other route to Silver Lake Lodge is via Marsac. Drive time is more or less the same using either route.

Properties in the Snow Park area (lower Deer Valley) are primarily ski condos. Rentals are easy to find - prices go from $300/night to $1000/night. The price difference is size, view, and private ski shuttle service.

Several condominiums in lower Deer Valley have a contract with Deer Valley Resort to provide for private shuttle pick up and drop off to Snow Park Lodge.  Prior to booking a lower Deer Valley unit,  check on if there is private shuttle availability. Condos with door-to-door ski shuttle service are similar to ski in/out properties and they cost less!

An advantage of lower Deer Valley lodging is that people are less likely to get altitude sickness at the lower elevation. While there is no guarantee that you won’t be affected by the altitude, your chances are better below 7500 feet.

Upper Deer Valley properties are comprised of condo-hotel, condominiums, townhomes, and incredible private homes.  An upper Deer Valley (Silver Lake) rental is  more expensive than a comparable lower Deer Valley property.  The price difference is usually about 40% to 50%.  A $500/night unit in lower Deer Valley may cost $750/night in upper Deer Valley.

Ski in-out  from your accommodations in upper Deer Valley is not a given fact.  Some units are almost ski in/out, and many others are not ski in/out at all.

There are two other development areas in upper Deer Valley, but are not part of Silver Lake. The prestigious Deer Crest area is located to the east of Silver Lake and is comprised of high-end mountain homes ranging from 6,000 square feet to 9,000 square feet – keep in mind this is the normal size range as there are monster mountain mansions that are much larger! Home rentals here are usually $1500 to $3500/night. Deer Crest homes are usually best suited for large groups, and prices are often highly negotiable.

To the west of Silver Lake is the newest development area in upper Deer Valley which is called Empire Canyon. New slopeside condominiums (Shooting Star, Arrowleaf, Flagstaff, and Silver Strike) surround the Silver Strike lift. Also located off the Silver Strike lift is a Talisker club facility for dining. Condo rentals here are usually $700 to $1200/night.

Tip to Prevent Altitude Sickness

Here is a good tip to help prevent/minimize altitude sickness.

In a previous trip to Park City, a friend of mine landed at the airport and we headed right up to the house at an elevation of 7000 feet.  She had mild symptoms of altitude sickness for a couple of days after arrival.

This trip, we went to a Salt Lake restaurant for lunch.  We drank a couple of glasses of water with to Park City.  We spent about four hours in the city before driving on to Park City.

The next day she told me that she had no symptoms of altitude sickness.  She felt that the time we spent in Salt Lake at lower elevation helped her acclimate.   Apparently, spending a short time in Salt Lake City helped her adjust to the elevation.

Altitude affects every person differently.  The rule of thumb is to acclimate 1000 feet of elevation every 24 hours beginning at 4000 to 5000 feet.  Many times on a ski vacation it is not feasible to do this, but if your schedule allows you to spend several hours at a lower elevation it may help you prevent or minimize the onset of altitude sickness.

When we place people in Park City lodging, a criteria in selecting a property is the elevation of the property.   If you are affected by altitude, obviously the lower your accommodations, the better.

Approximate Park City altitudes are: the Canyons (6400 feet), Park City proper (6900 feet), lower Deer Valley (7100 feet), and upper Deer Valley (8000 feet).

The character of Park City has been slowly changing over the past 3-4 years from a seasonal vacation destination to a place where families set their roots and make Park City their home.

Park City started changing into a location desired by full time residents in the 1990s and 2000s. Motivating factors included small town environment vs. metropolitan area, overall attitude of mountain town residents, health consciousness, and accessibility to winter sports and summer recreation.

Being only 25 minutes to the Salt Lake City via Interstate 80, Park City now has easy access to quality health care facilities, shopping, air transportation, i.e., all that is needed from a big city environment.

A  big plus is that the town of Park City is extremely pro-active in protecting its mountain charm. In Old Town, you can't knock down old historic buildings.  If a large development is proposed on vacant land, the town usually offers to buy the land for open space.  Future generations will benefit from the wisdom of current town elders.

Notwithstanding the protection of Old Town, Park City has residential subdivisions that offer modern construction.  In Park City you can find housing at reasonable prices.

Perhaps the best illustration would be a comparison of Park City to Aspen, Colorado.  Aspen area real estate costs double or triple of what it costs in Park City.  A nice 3-4 bedroom 3000 square foot home can be bought for $600,000 to $900,000.

Affordable Park City Dining

Great Food and Low Prices at Davanzas

It is hard to find regular food at regular prices when it comes to Park City dining. High end, gourmet options abound, but if you have children or just want to eat and not have a dining event, try these spots.

Davanzas is a pizza, burger type joint located just below the Town Lift. To get there from the lift, go the street underneath the lift (west of Main St) and walk uphill 1 block.  The dining area is small so you feel like you are in a mountain town pizza place.  Fresh ingredients are their signature. The menu has a good variety. Best of all, the prices are reasonable.

Main Street Pizza and Noodle is another place for OK fare at reasonable prices. Unlike Davanzas, there is alot of seating at Main Street Pizza and Noodle, so if you have a group of say 6-10, this is a good place. At Main Street Pizza and Noodle, you order at the counter and the food is delivered to your table by a server. Like Davanzas, prices are reasonable.  One word of caution, they specialize in pizza which is always a safe bet.  I have had undercooked lasagna there, but overall the food is good.

The Eating Establishment has restaurants on both Main Street and at Park City Mountain Resort. At Park City Mountain Resort, they are located right below the Payday lift.  The Eating Establishment is a Park City standard.. Good food, reasonable prices, and quick service.

The Wasatch Brew Pub is another good place. It is a sit down restaurant, slightly more expensive than the other places, located at the top of Main Street.  Take the trolley up the hill and then walk down the hill after your meal.

Deer Crest homes are best suited for large groups or people who just want to stay in a really expensive place! Deer Crest rental prices are often negotiable, so before you drop $5K/night on a place to sleep, try a little bargaining.



To the west of Silver Lake is Empire Canyon. Lodging options include Shooting Star, Arrowleaf, Flagstaff, and Silver Strike condominiums which surround the Silver Strike lift. The exclusive Talisker club is also located in this pocket. Condo rentals here are usually $800 to $1500/night. On a number of these properties, note that pricing is all over the place. One owner may want $2000/night for his unit while another owner of an identical unit may rent it for $1000/night.
